How Much Crying is Involved in Sleep Training?

One of the most common questions I get asked as a sleep consultant is: "How much crying is involved in sleep training?" 🤔

And it’s a completely valid question! As parents, we naturally want to support our little ones as they develop healthy sleep habits. But when the topic of crying comes up, it can feel overwhelming, confusing, or even guilt-inducing.

Before we unpack the answer, let’s talk about the two ends of the sleep training spectrum:

  1. The No-Cry Sleep Solution

  2. The Cry It Out (CIO) Method

These two approaches are often the most talked about, and while they may work for some families, they’re not the only options out there. In fact, there’s a middle ground – and that’s where my approach as a sleep consultant comes in.

Where Does Crying Fit Into Sleep Training?

Here’s the honest truth: your baby will cry. Crying is a natural way for babies to express themselves, and when there’s change (like learning new sleep skills), it’s completely normal for them to protest a little.

But how much crying can you expect? Well, that depends on a few factors, including your baby’s temperament, their sleep habits, and your consistency in implementing a plan.

How Long Does the Crying Last?

The reality is that every child is different. While some children might cry for only 5-10 minutes before settling, others may take longer, particularly in the early days of learning a new routine. On average, however, the crying lasts anywhere between 45 to 60 minutes before your baby falls asleep.

I’ve also worked with families where the crying lasted as little as 5 minutes, and others where it stretched out to closer to 2 hours. It’s all part of the process as your little one learns to settle and develop independent sleep skills.

Why a Middle-Ground Approach Works

You might be wondering: "Why can’t there be a completely no-cry method?" The truth is, sleep training involves change. And change is hard – even for adults! For babies and toddlers, crying is a way to release tension and communicate their frustration about something new.

However, a middle-ground approach means that crying doesn’t happen without support. In my programs, I focus on gentle yet effective strategies to help your child learn to fall asleep independently, while ensuring they feel safe, nurtured, and supported every step of the way.

What Are the Sleep Training Methods?

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to sleep training, which is why I help families find the approach that suits their child’s needs and their parenting style. Here are the 4 most common sleep training methods:

  1. The No-Cry Approach: A very gradual approach that aims to eliminate crying altogether. While this may work for some families, it often requires a lot of time and patience to see results.

  2. The Check-In Method (also called Controlled Comforting): This involves leaving your baby for short intervals before returning to reassure them. It helps build independent sleep skills with gentle support.

  3. The Gradual Retreat Method: Parents gradually move further away from their child’s sleep space over time, providing comfort as needed until the baby can fall asleep independently.

  4. The Cry It Out (CIO) Method: This involves leaving the baby to cry until they fall asleep without offering comfort. While it can be effective, it’s not the right fit for every family.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Family

The key to successful sleep training is finding the method that works for you and your child. If you’re someone who feels more comfortable with a hands-on approach, that’s okay! If you prefer something a little more structured, that’s okay too. Sleep training is about progress, not perfection, and it’s my job to guide you through it in a way that aligns with your parenting style.
